USB devices Stop working after NVIDIA Driver Update

Lunes, 28 de Diciembre de 2009

Recently while updating  my graphics card (NVIDIA 8600 GS) using the automatic tool from NVDIA site, (which proposed me the 179.48 version for windows vista 32 [beta]) welusbl, since it is on a laptop thus is an OEM chipset they recommended to check that your equipment is in the approved list for Download, in the list they said that all FSC laptops (except for a model of Amilo) were supported.

So i downloaded the 122mb and installed,  to my surprise and despair, none of the USB periferials or ports seemed to be working after the installation and the restart.

I googled the problem and it seems to be happening to a lot of people. I run Vista home 32 but I’ve seen reports of the problem on XP too.

Rolling back the NVIDIA driver do NOT solve the problem; System Restore do NOT solve the problem.

The Solution…

I rolled back and restored the system to a previous point. (there was also a windows update waiting to be installed when NVIDIA restarted.)

Anyway all my ports were dead and only the little light of the USB hubs was on the mouse or keyboards were irresponsive and no lights showing.

I solved that by:

Gone to Control Panel –> Device Manager

There I removed all the instances of Universal Serial Bus Controllers

And hit the Scan for Hardware Changes little button.

It started detecting a lot of unknown devices and after a while all my USB peripherals were back on working

Hope this helps some one!

After manually removing the USB and having the system find them back i went ahead and tried installing the driver.

This time my USB stuff stayed alive, however my 1920×1080 @ 60 hertz screen was no longer able to show that resolution, i fiddled with the NVIDIA control panel and created it as a custom resolution and that seem to have solved the problem.

So dont burn your Laptop mother board, dont go buying external USB ports, NVIDIA released unstable drivers that are messing with the system that is all.
